Our Story
Jewish Surprise (AKA Chabad of Surprise) was established in 2024 to serve the Jewish community of Surprise, Arizona, and its neighboring towns. Chabad of Surprise is a welcoming place for all, regardless of affiliation or background. Our mission is to create a warm and inviting environment to explore and experience Judaism in an open and inspiring way.
Since its inception, Chabad of Surprise has provided religious services, social events, and community programs, including holiday celebrations, Hebrew school, hospital visits, weddings, funerals, and Shabbat meals.
Chabad of Surprise is an independent, nonprofit organization that is financially self-supporting. Every dollar received comes from generous donors like you, and contributions are fully tax-deductible.
Meet the Ceitlins

Rabbi Shlomy & Batya Ceitlin (née Lew), along with their baby Mendel, moved to Surprise and founded Chabad of Surprise in 2024.
Rabbi Shlomo grew up in Montreal before pursuing his studies in Jewish thought and practice in Toronto & Baltimore. He received his Bachelor's in Jewish Law from Y.O.E.C. and rabbinical ordination in Brooklyn, NY. His infectious optimism and joyful personality drive his commitment to the community.
Batya Ceitlin (née Lew) was born and raised in Peoria, AZ. After attending the local Jewish day schools in Phoenix, she graduated from Bais Rivkah High School in Crown Heights, Bais Chana in Israel, and Bais Rivkah Seminary. She is a passionate educator, giving women’s classes while teaching her middle school students. Her exquisite taste shines through in the events she plans for Chabad.
